Liz Barre (M.S. ’24)
Hometown: Ithaca, New York
EST&P Concentration: Mechanical Engineering
B.S. Mechanical Engineering with an additional major in Engineering & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University (May 23)

Meet Liz Barre, a graduate student in the EST&P - 2 semester program at Carnegie Mellon University. Liz completed her undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering with an additional major in Engineering & Public Policy, both from Carnegie Mellon University, graduating in May 2023.

While doing her undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon, Liz was involved in various academic and extracurricular activities. She engaged in research projects, internships, and extracurricular activities related to her field of study. Liz chose to pursue the EST&P program at CMU because she wanted to be part of a program tailored to her interests, surrounded by a cohort of peers with similar passions in the field of energy.

During her time at CMU, Liz has enjoyed several courses, with one of her favorites being "Energy Transport and Conversion at the Nanoscale" taught by Professor Jonathen Malen from the MechE department. This course delved into the physics behind energy and the role of materials in energy systems, providing a deeper understanding of energy principles.

Outside of academics, Liz cherishes the moments spent with her peers in the lounge, attending classes, and participating in various events. She is also a member of the women's varsity track and field team, where she hones her athletic skills and fosters teamwork. During the course of this degree, Liz has attended multiple local, regional and national track meets and has been a source of inspiration for many of her peers.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Liz actively participates in events, conferences, and seminars related to energy and sustainability. She regularly attends Scott Institute Seminars, where experts discuss cutting-edge research and innovations in the field.

Looking ahead, Liz is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead in her journey. She aspires to contribute to the field of energy through research, innovation, and policy interventions. With her diverse skill set and passion for sustainability, Liz is poised to make a meaningful impact in the energy sector. After the completion of her 2 semester degree, she’s going to be joining Sargent and Lundy as an associate (1) mechanical engineer, working with their energy and industry group, this July.
