Congratulations EST&P Classes of 2021, 2022 & 2023!

By Nicole Rihn

The EST&P master’s program celebrated the graduation of 23 students on May 13, 2023, that included those from its 2021, 2022 and 2023 classes. At the diploma ceremony, graduates received their Foundational Energy Master's Degrees or Applied Study Energy Master's Degrees. They have become part of our network of over 250 EST&P alumni and over 109,000 CMU alumni from around the world. Over 80 attendees, including graduates, family, friends, and EST&P core faculty, attended the lunch reception and ceremony in the Bosch Spark Conference Room in Scott Hall.

One EST&P core faculty member, Panos Moutis, gave a short speech to the graduates. "You've made it through the dread of the unknown, so trust yourselves more and have more confidence in your skills and tenacity,” Panos said. “You will persevere! And for that reason, make sure you treat yourself well: exercise, eat healthy, go to therapy. You are the captain of your ship, and the unknown does not scare you as you already navigated it once and we are all here to testify to and celebrate you for that." Panos will be leaving the university to pursue a new position as Assistant Professor for the Department of Electrical Engineering at The City University of New York Grove School of Engineering. EST&P thanks Panos for all his dedication to the program and our students. We wish him all the best in this next stage!

Raafe Khan (M.S., EST&P, 2016), an EST&P alum, delivered the keynote speech at the ceremony. Raafe is the Director of Energy Storage at Pine Gate Renewables and Global Ambassador at Battery Associates. He received his master's degree in Energy Science, Technology, and Policy, with a concentration in Engineering and Public Policy. “Today is not just any other day, it marks the beginning of a lifelong journey,” Raafe spoke. “A journey of adventure, continuous learning, growth, and self-reflection.” He encouraged our graduates to embrace every opportunity to learn, to broaden their horizons, and to challenge their own perspectives. “The world is waiting for your unique talents, your innovative ideas, and your unwavering grit and determination.”

Two Academic Excellence awards were given to graduates to acknowledge their outstanding academic achievements:

  • Prathit Dave (M.S., EST&P-AAS, 2022)
  • Marilyn Kung (M.S., EST&P, 2023)

Congratulations to all the 2021, 2022 and 2023 EST&P graduates!
