Jessica Lyman (M.S. '12)

Since graduating EST&P in 2012, Jessica Lyman has held three very different jobs within the energy sector. She expressed that each experience brought unique learning opportunities that have reiterated concepts taught in the EST&P program and allowed her to apply them in a practical environment. Jessica chose Carnegie Mellon and the EST&P program since it effectively balances teaching the highly technical concepts applicable to the energy industry while also focusing on the motivating factors like policy and business interests that drive the direction of the industry. The recognition that there are externalities that drive technological advances has been a central point at each of the jobs shes had in the last four years.

Jessica is now a management consultant with Black & Veatch focused on helping electric utility clients implement and derive value out of smart metering infrastructure. Prior to Black & Veatch, Jessica worked at ICF International in support of EPA’s ENERGY STAR® program focused residential appliances. Jessica partnered with her EPA clients in driving the release of the first ever ENERGY STAR specification for residential clothes dryers. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon in 2012, Jessica interned at the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) where she supported the Green Button initiative – an effort focused on providing consumers with access to their energy usage data - and participated in a CEQ led, inter-agency effort, to streamline high power transmission line permitting. Jessica also holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University and originally started her career in the aerospace industry.
