2026 Alumni Service Award
During his 35-year career in the U.S. Air Force, retired Brigadier General Robert D. Bowie built a legacy of service and leadership that has earned him national recognition. He brings the same dedication to his alma mater, where he has helped strengthen the Black alumni community and empower future generations of Tartans.
As president of CMU’s Black Alumni Association (CMBAA), Robert works tirelessly to support alumni, mentor students and build connections. He routinely opens his home to CMBAA events, creating a welcoming space that transforms the network into a true community. Robert also provides CMU with strategic guidance and philanthropic support. He is a member of the Black Alumni Association Endowment Board, the College of Engineering’s Dean’s Advocacy Council and the Andrew Carnegie Society.
During his military career, Robert made a significant impact on national security. He held various operational and Headquarters Air Force staff assignments as a civil engineer and commanded at the squadron and group level. Serving as a vice wing commander, he was responsible for 21 F-16 fighter aircraft, three 737 airlift aircraft and 1,250 personnel tasked with overseas combat, homeland defense and global VIP transport. He held critical leadership roles for four presidential inaugurations, highlighted by serving as the Deputy Commanding General for the 2021 inauguration where he integrated 35 interagency partners and 20,000 people across 27 inaugural events.
In his last assignment, Robert served at the Pentagon as the special assistant to the Director, Air National Guard, for the Assistant Secretary of Air Force Energy, Installations and Environment. Currently, he is the founder and owner of Quantum Leap Services LLC, a construction and consulting company.
Robert received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and mathematics from CMU, a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Michigan University and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the Air War College.
