The final words of a term paper stretch across a computer screen. Suddenly, the blinking cursor comes to a halt. The screen goes black. The author frantically tries to reboot his computer only to realize that a virus has rendered it useless junk. Such nightmares have been lessened thanks to the work of Anita K. Jones (CS'73, Hon'99), a leading researcher in the detection of malicious viruses. Recently, she was elected to the American Philosophical Society-the oldest learned society in the United States, which today has about 1,000 members. Since 1900, more than 240 members have received the Nobel Prize.
