Carnegie Mellon University Professor Tiziana Di Matteo has been selected as a scientific editor for the Astrophysical Journal.

New editors are selected by the editor-in-chief of the AAS Journals, in consultation with the editorial board and its publications committee.

The Astrophysical Journal was founded in 1895, being one of the oldest and most prestigious within the discipline. ApJ publishes more than 4,000 scientific articles per year and has been one of the most significant means of disseminating discoveries in the area. It is the premier journal for the publication of high-impact astronomical research and it publishes the most influential developments across astronomy and astrophysics.

Di Matteo's new appointment took effect on Oct. 1, 2024. Scientific editors are responsible for evaluating and selecting research papers to be published in the journal, ensuring the quality of the science presented, and overseeing the peer-review process.

Di Matteo, who also directs Carnegie Mellon's McWilliams Center for Cosmology & Astrophysics, studies black holes encompassing a wide range of topics in both high energy astrophysics and cosmology. They include state-of-the-art simulations of galaxy formation and black hole growth across cosmic history as well as investigations of various aspects of the physics of accretion disks around black holes.
