Press Release: Real-time Information From Drug Monitoring Systems Improves Regimen Adherence, Carnegie Mellon Researchers Find
In a 10-month study in the homes of older adults with chronic health problems, the researchers found that adherence to a medication regimen improved when people had ready access to a digital display of their medication-taking record. These people were more likely to take the correct medication promptly and at the same time of day than people who didn't receive the ongoing feedback.

The purely digital images, "trapped" for nearly 30 years on Amiga® floppy disks stored in the archives collection of The Andy Warhol Museum (AWM), were discovered and extracted by members of the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Club, with assistance from the AWM's staff, CMU's Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry (FRSCI), the Hillman Photography Initiative at the Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) and New York-based artist Cory Arcangel.

For this year's FIRST, the 39-member Girls of Steel built a robot called Atlas that is designed to catch and throw 24-inch game balls. During the event, the robots will play a game called Aerial Assist, in which two alliances of three robots each will try to score as many goals as possible within a time limit.

A 14-month study showed that people reflected more on past events and developed a renewed interest in their online photos when a device called Photobox would randomly print four or five of those photos at varying intervals each month. Though the study involved just a handful of households, the researchers said their findings suggest that, in a world where technology is always on, people sometimes find value in taking it slow.

Called Kinetica, this proof-of-concept system for the Apple iPad converts tabular data, such as Excel spreadsheets, so that data points appear as colored spheres on the touchscreen. People can directly manipulate this data, using natural gestures to sort, filter, stack, flick and pull data points as needed to help them answer questions or explore hidden relationships.

Davidson Collegiate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he served as chair for Computer Science and Engineering from 2007 to 2011 and as director of the Software Systems Laboratory from 1997 to 2000. Since 2011 he has been on leave as the National Science Foundation's assistant director for Computer and Information Science and Engineering.
