Problem-Solving in Puerto Rico

Carmen Yulin Cruz and Alex Hills

In mid-May EPP Distinguished Service Professor Alex Hills traveled to Puerto Rico to investigate opportunities for Carnegie Mellon students to develop ways to avoid electric power problems like the ones caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. He met with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and with professors and administrators at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez, where he also gave a seminar. Dr. Hills was looking for student projects in CMU’s Technology Consulting in the Global Community program (aka “Geeks on a Mission”). Discussions with Puerto Rico officials are ongoing.
