Carnegie Mellon Receives The No. 1 Rank in 8 Program and Specialty Areas

Carnegie Mellon University has been recognized as No. 22 among National Universities in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2022-2023 Best Colleges Rankings.

CMU was additionally ranked No. 3 Most Innovative School and received 23 top 10 rankings.

CMU ranks No. 1 overall in computer science. In addition, Carnegie Mellon University ranks first in eight specialty areas, within the business, computer science and engineering programs that train the next generation of innovators to solve real-world problems and improve the way people live and work. They include artificial intelligence, computer engineering, cybersecurity, management information systems, mobile/web applications, programming languages, quantitative analysis and software engineering.

“Excellence and impact are at the heart of Carnegie Mellon University’s mission and reputation, and I am so pleased to see the recent rankings report reflect our commitment to continually advance new frontiers in an accessible, innovative and transformative education,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian.

Additionally, 17 CMU programs ranked in the top five — including business, computer systems, data analytics and production operations management — and another six are in the top 10, giving CMU a total of 23 programs in the top 10 of this year’s rankings.

CMU has also seen an increase in six-year graduation and retention rates, reflecting a decade of focus on programming to enhance and improve the student experience and graduation rates.

This ranking is the result of CMU’s increased commitment of financial resources to support educational expenses. This includes increases for instruction, student services, academic support and institutional support for research. U.S. News surveyed schools in spring and summer 2022.
