Phase II: Online Application Materials

Submission of online application materials is the first step in your application process. You will need to complete the online application by January 19, 2017 at 12:00pm (noon).

New RA Candidates (for candidates who have never been an RA): CLICK HERE

You will need to complete an online RA application form in full which includes:

1. Biographical Information

2. Short Answer Questions

  • List and briefly describe your anticipated campus involvement next year.
  • Are there any circumstances that you would like to share that could affect your ability to accept a position in any of the housing areas?


3. Uploading your Statement of Interest:

The two-page statement of interest, should provide a general introduction regarding your candidacy for the RA position and answers to the following questions:

  • What is your interest in and motivation for serving as an RA in the 2017-18 academic year?
  • How you would describe yourself and your role to your residents at the start of next year?
  • What are 2-3 specific areas in which you hope to have substantive impact on the lives of your residents through your work as an RA?
  • What are some of the relevant skills, strengths and personal characteristics that you believe will facilitate your success in delivering on that ambition?


4. Uploading your Resume:

Your resume should include the following:

  • A summary of past and current job experiences, curricular experiences and extracurricular activities that you have participated in.
  • Relevant areas of involvement in both High School and College, as well as any special achievements or recognition that you have received.

5. References

You will be asked to supply the name and contact information for 2 individuals who you have asked to serve as references for you in the RA selection process.

  • The first reference should be a staff or faculty member at Carnegie Mellon who can speak to your qualifications and fit for the RA role.  This may be a Housefellow, advisor, coach, professor, or someone else at the Univeristy with whom you have built a substantive relationship.  In the event that there is no one at CMU who fits this description, it is acceptable to identify someone else who can speak to your qualifications (a high school mentor, someone from outside the CMU community, a coach, etc).
  • The second reference must be a student leader from Carnegie Mellon who knows you well and can speak to your qualifications and fit for the RA role.  This may be your RA or CA, a leader in student organization you are involved in, a TA for a class you have taken, or someone else in a similar leadership role.

Returning RA Candidates (for candidates who have previously been an RA for at least one full semester): CLICK HERE

You will need to complete an online RA application form in full which includes:

1. Biographical Information

2. Short Answer Questions:

  • Describe your motivation to return to the RA position? 
  • What are three specific things that you would hope to accomplish if you were selected to return to the RA position?
  • As a returning RA, how do you envision your role on a staff with new RAs to be different?
  • How would you ensure that you do not become complacent as a returning RA?

3. Uploading your Resume

Your resume should include the following:

  • A summary of past and current job experiences, curricular experiences and extracurricular activities that you have participated in.
  • Relevant areas of involvement in both High School and College, as well as any special achievements or recognition that you have received.

NOTE FOR BOTH NEW AND RETURNING CANDIDATES: By submitting your application, you consent to a check of your university academic record and judicial record to determine whether you are an enrolled student in good standing with the university. Students with below a 2.25 for either Fall 2016 or cumulative QPA are not elibible to be hired as an RA.  Applicants with Fall 2016 or cumulative QPAs below 2.25 are welcome to participate in the interview process and may be identified as alternates as a result of their perfomance in the selection process.  Applicants who have an academic or judicial history that could have some negative impact on their candidacy will be contacted by a Housefellow to discuss the situation.
