Dr. Phillip Yu to join EPP as Executive Director of Master's Programs

Dr. Phillip Yu will join Engineering and Public Policy in June as Executive Director of Master’s Programs.

Dr. Yu was most recently employed at PPG Industries, where he worked in several capacities over 30 years, most recently serving as Director for Corporate Science and Technology Initiatives and Operations for a decade. In his role at PPG, he was responsible for managing innovation, technology strategy, new product development, external partnerships, securing government funding, leading the global analytical labs, and workforce development. His teams' achievements have included $150 M in new product sales, $100 M in grants from government agencies, and $100 M in a variety of cost savings initiatives. Over the span of his career, his teams have commercialized optical switching devices for eyewear, Trivex® lens material, select HiGard® optical coatings, OLED emitting materials, and energy management coatings, where he is named in eight patents. Besides being Executive Director of Master’s Programs, Phil will be an Associate Teaching Professor in the department. Phil holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Solid State Chemistry from Tufts University.

In his new role, Phil will provide intellectual vision for the Engineering & Technology Innovation Management program. This includes curriculum design, program evaluation, and continuing to build ETIM’s network of corporate partners. Phil will have administrative responsibility for both the ETIM and EPP Master’s programs, working in close conjunction with EPP faculty on the latter.
