Community Dialogue hosted by the Eberly Center: “What can we carry forward after 2020?” The Fall semester represents a major transition towards “the new normal” in terms of possible classroom formats, instructional strategies, and opportunities for student interaction. This interaction session is meant to provide a generative space for concrete strategies as we navigate current teaching and learning challenges. We will discuss questions such as: How have we assessed student learning better and how can we continue to do better? What active learning strategies were particularly effective in remote environments and how can they be adapted for different modalities? How did we encourage community engagement and how can we continue to support both student and instructor well-being? In what other areas can we continue to iterate and do even better? Participants will be in interdisciplinary groups in breakout rooms for the first half of the session, collaborating on a shared Google Doc, followed by a structured debrief. Takeaways and concrete strategies will be compiled and shared afterward on our website. |

Supporting Ourselves and Our Students: Navigating Mental Health in the Classroom (a CaPS + Eberly collaboration) Remarks by Shane Chaplin, Executive Director of Counseling & Psychological Services How can you attend to students’ mental health crises while maintaining your own well-being and boundaries? What are students’ top concerns that impact their learning in the classroom? How can you design and teach courses in a way that inherently supports student well-being? In this experiential session, jointly facilitated by Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) and the Eberly Center, participants will reflect on and generate actionable strategies for supporting both themselves and their students in navigating mental health concerns, while establishing and maintaining boundaries for self. Note: This session will count towards the Future Faculty Program. Attendance for graduate students and postdocs will be tracked and entered into Grad App after the Summit. Registration through Grad App is not required, but you must be registered for the Summit to access the materials and Zoom link. Register today! |
