NEED TO KNOW: July 14-15 Campus Operations
Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community,
As shared in President Jahanian’s June 13 message, Senator Dave McCormick will convene the inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit on the CMU campus on Tuesday, July 15. President Donald Trump is expected to attend in addition to industry leaders and government officials. We are working closely with the senator’s team to prepare our campus for this event.
As has been the case with previous presidential visits to CMU, we anticipate significant disruptions to campus operations from Monday afternoon, July 14, through Tuesday, July 15.
While details will not be finalized until closer to the event, we are sharing the following initial information and guidance for the CMU community, which is also available on our new Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit: What CMU Community Members Need to Know web page. The web page will be updated accordingly as plans evolve.
Road Closures, Parking and Transportation
-
- Significant road closures on and near campus are expected on July 15.
- Some parking areas will be closed or inaccessible on July 15. Transportation Services will communicate directly with affected permit holders once those are determined.
- Shuttle routes may be adjusted or suspended due to road closures. Check the shuttle schedule page and bus tracker app for route changes before riding.
-
- Due to the anticipated disruptions, the university encourages employees whose duties do not require them to be on the main campus to work remotely on July 15. Employees should coordinate work plans in advance with their immediate supervisor.
- Summer classes will take place as scheduled on July 15; however, the Provost’s Office has encouraged instructors to assess whether their class can be delivered remotely and consider shifting to that format. Instructors will communicate directly with students regarding class format.
- We expect one or more campus buildings will be closed and inaccessible, even to ID card holders, while other buildings will be ID-access only on the afternoon of July 14 and all day July 15. Carry your CMU ID with you if you are on campus.
- The Morewood Avenue location will be closed on July 15. A limited number of children may be able to transfer to the Penn Avenue location, which will remain open. Cyert Center staff will reach out to parents of enrolled children with details soon.
- Pre-College and summer camp staff will communicate any schedule or program changes to enrolled students and their families.
-
- The Welcome Center in Tepper will be closed, and no in-person admissions events or tours will take place on July 15.
- Those hosting on-campus events or meetings with visitors on July 15 should expect logistical challenges and plan accordingly.
-
- The summit is an invitation-only event and not open to the public. Pre-clearances will be required for participants and invited guests.
- A few general safety precautions:
- Please don’t allow anyone you don’t know into CMU buildings.
- Consider reviewing our university community’s commitment to free expression and civil discourse.
- Report any suspicious activity or safety concerns immediately to the CMU Police at 412-268-2323.
Again, we expect to have more details in the days to come, and some information may change ahead of the summit. Updates will be posted to the What CMU Community Members Need to Know web page as they occur, and you can expect additional updates via email closer to the event.
Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility.
Sincerely,
