UPDATE: July 14-15 Campus Operations
Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community,
As we shared in our July 1 message, CMU is working with Senator Dave McCormick’s office to prepare our campus for the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit on Tuesday, July 15, which President Trump and other high-profile leaders are expected to attend. The summit is invitation-only but will be livestreamed on Sen. McCormick’s YouTube channel.
Our highest priority is hosting a safe and successful event that highlights the best of Carnegie Mellon. The U.S. Secret Service and several law enforcement agencies joined the planning effort this week to provide direction on security measures.
Below, we share the latest updates regarding campus operations and restrictions on Monday and Tuesday, July 14-15. Should this information change, updates will be posted on the What CMU Community Members Need to Know web page.
Be Remote If Possible
- As with all high-profile events, this will create disruptions to our normal operations. To reduce the number of people on campus, employees and students whose presence is not required to maintain essential operations should utilize available remote work and learning options on Tuesday, if possible.
-
- In addition to the U.S. Secret Service, the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and Pennsylvania State police are managing security for the event and the area surrounding campus, with assistance from CMU, Pitt and Chatham officers.
- No agencies are coordinating with ICE for this event.
- Several planned demonstrations and marches are expected to draw crowds to the area. Review the university’s commitment to free expression and civil discourse.
- Report suspicious activity to the CMU Police at 412-268-2323.
Roads, Parking and Transportation
-
- Temporary road and sidewalk closures and blockages are expected throughout the day Tuesday on Forbes and Fifth Aves., and potentially other nearby streets.
- The East Campus Garage and Morewood Lot will be closed to parking from 11 p.m. Monday through 5 a.m. Wednesday. Transportation Services is communicating with affected permit holders. Other parking areas may be inaccessible due to temporary road closures/blockages.
- Any CMU shuttle route changes will be available on the bus tracker app.
Campus/Building Access and Closures
-
- The Cohon University Center will close at 5 p.m. Monday and remain closed all day Tuesday. It will not be accessible to CMU ID card holders during the closure. Normal building operations will resume Wednesday.
- Security fencing will prevent access to portions of campus from Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
- All other buildings will be accessible only with CMU ID from 6:30 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Carry your CMU ID on campus, and don’t let anyone you don’t know into a CMU building.
Cohon Center Service
- The Postal Services counter and pickup window/lockers will be closed, and there will be no deliveries or pickups, after 1 p.m. Monday and all day Tuesday. Campus mail will be delivered by 1 p.m. Monday but not on Tuesday.
- Tartan Ink’s Cohon Center location will be closed after 1 p.m. Monday and all day Tuesday. Copy and print services will continue to be available at the Hall of Arts location.
- University Stores will be closed after 1 p.m. Monday and all day Tuesday.
- The Fitness Center and all other fitness spaces in the Cohon Center will be closed all day Monday and Tuesday with no GroupX classes. The Tepper Fitness Center will be open from 8 a.m to 8 p.m., or online fitness videos are available.
- Dining Services locations in the Cohon Center will be closed all day Monday and Tuesday, but other on-campus eateries will be open.
Student Support
- Student Affairs offices in the Cohon Center will have adjusted operations:
- The Career & Professional Development Center will operate at its West Wing location on Tuesday.
- The Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion will operate at the Fifth Avenue Neighborhood Commons Multipurpose Room beginning at noon Monday and all day Tuesday.
- The offices of Community Engagement & Leadership Development and Student Involvement & Traditions (formerly SLICE) will maintain reception operations remotely on Tuesday with staff available on campus to support select activities.
- Several student programs and activities are being offered on Tuesday in community gathering spaces and residence halls. See the CMU calendar for details on those events that are open to all students.
- Community gathering spaces available to students include Fifth Avenue Neighborhood Commons, Highmark Center for Health, Wellness and Athletics, Hunt Library, Margaret Morrison Street Neighborhood Commons and Sorrells Library.
Again, we recognize that high-profile events such as this bring disruptions to normal operations. We are grateful for your cooperation and flexibility as we seek to host an event that elevates CMU and Pittsburgh, and showcases the meaningful work happening on campus and in our region every day.
Sincerely,
Gina Casalegno
