Announcing an Increased Minimum Doctoral Stipend

Dear Carnegie Mellon Doctoral Students:

Building on our continued initiatives to provide holistic doctoral student support, we are pleased to share that the minimum stipend for doctoral students will be increased to $2,500 per month, or $30,000 annually, for 12-month programs. For qualifying stipend-supported doctoral students, this change will be retroactive to the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1, 2023) and will be reflected in the November 2023 pay period.

This stipend increase builds on a strong and effective partnership between university leadership and the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA). Last spring, we committed to GSA leadership that we would establish a regular review process of minimum doctoral stipend levels to evaluate and consider cost of living increases and other market factors. Following this inaugural review, we will review stipends annually.

This stipend increase is a continuation of the past year’s progress and efforts, including a Parental Accommodation Program for doctoral students and expanded holistic support by establishing a minimum stipend, setting guidelines for time-away-from-program, and increasing university support to 100% of individual premium cost for coverage through the Student Healthcare Insurance Program (SHIP).

We look forward to our continued partnership with GSA, and with all students and stakeholders across the university, to identify strategies and services in support of the CMU student experience.

Sincerely,
