Press Release: Pitt, Carnegie Mellon Launch New Effort To Improve Multi-scale Modeling of Biological Systems
The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) have been awarded a five-year, $9.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to establish the Biomedical Technology Research Center (BTRC) that will develop computational tools for modeling and simulating biological systems from the tissue level down to the molecular level.

In a two-year project sponsored by the National Defense Center for Energy and Environment, CTC, under Prime Contract W91ZLK-10-D-0005 with NREC as a subcontractor, will build six autonomous mobile robots, each with a laser coating remover, and deploy them to work in teams to remove paint and other coatings from aircraft at Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah.

CMU's Solar Splash team has received $40,000 for their research to develop a competitive solar-powered 18-foot-long racing boat. The team was one of 10 programs selected nationwide to receive the "E2 Energy to Educate" grant, which comes from the Constellation Energy family of retail electricity and natural gas suppliers.

The prize recognizes and encourages outstanding theoretical or experimental contributions to condensed-matter physics and is awarded for a highly important contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field. For Berger and co-winner John Slonczewski, IBM research staff emeritus, that advancement was independently "predicting spin-transfer torque and opening the field of current-induced control over magnetic nanostructures."

Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center is part of a team assembled by prime contractor Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to design, build and test an unmanned autonomous surface vessel that can track a diesel-electric submarine for months and over thousands of kilometers with minimal supervision.
