Carnegie Mellon University

Application Information

Undergraduates planning to become English majors apply to the University (rather than directly to the English Department). The earliest that a student can declare a major is mid-semester of the second semester of freshman year. Primary majors should be declared no later than mid-semester of the last semester of sophomore year. Please visit the CMU Undergraduate Admissions website to learn about applying to CMU and the College of H&SS.

Please contact us if you have any questions or would like more information about our program. We recommend that if you seriously are considering applying to Carnegie Mellon and majoring in creative writing that you arrange to visit us, sit in on classes, and meet some current students in the program. Please contact Sharon Dilworth, the creative writing program director, to schedule a meeting as part of your campus visit or to ask any questions about the program.

Many of our students come to us through the Bachelor of Humanities and Arts (BHA) Program, an interdisciplinary program between the Humanities College and the College of Fine Arts. Potential applicants who have an interest in another art form in addition to creative writing should look into applying to the BHA Program.
