Statistics & Data Science Offers New Graduate Certificate

The Department of Statistics & Data Science at Carnegie Mellon University recently launched a new, online graduate certificate in Foundations of Data Science (FDS). The new program provides a flexible learning opportunity for working professionals from all backgrounds to unlock the power of data.

Data has transformed nearly every industry, and it will continue to do so for years to come. The flexible program helps technical and non-technical professionals develop the skillset to analyze and communicate about data more effectively. The certificate program examines skills like interrogating and analyzing real-world data as well as evaluating the structure of basic data pipelines with modern coding languages. The program culminates in a capstone experience that emphasizes communicating the "story" behind the data."

“This new FDS certificate is a fantastic opportunity for both working professionals and students looking to level up their data skills, learning from CMU faculty at the pace that works for your schedule,” said Rebecca Nugent, the Fienberg Professor of Statistics & Data Science and head of the Department of Statistics & Data Science at CMU. “Whether you’re looking for a new career opportunity, preparing for graduate school, or just want to unleash the power of data, the FDS certificate is for everyone.”

The program was developed in collaboration with Learning Engineers and CMU faculty. Participants complete five courses that span probability and statistics, statistical modeling and machine learning, data visualization, computing workflow and real-world data applications.

Participants meet weekly for at least one online class (60–90 minutes) through Zoom with an expert CMU professor paired with independent learning activities that students can complete when their schedule allows.

Applications are now open for the Summer 2024 semester. The application deadline is April 9, 2024.
