Civility Framework

Civility takes place at the intersection of community, cultural humility, historical consciousness, and healing through restorative practice.

  • Community: Identifying and centering shared values, challenging power imbalances, and honoring the diverse knowledge and experiences of members of our community.
  • Cultural Humility: The ongoing commitment to self-reflection and self-critique, examination of one’s own beliefs and identities, and intentional engagement in learning from, with, and about others.
  • Historical Consciousness: In this context, it is the awareness of past frameworks of exclusion that are still shaping the present realities for members of our community. Historical consciousness also acknowledges the critiques of civility and how it has been used to silence minoritized populations.
  • Healing: Individual and collective healing of historical, institutional, and interpersonal harms is pursued through dialogic and restorative practice, which aims to strengthen relationships and connections within communities.
