Ensuring an Equitable Clean Energy Future

As the United States systematically shifts toward sustainable practices and pushes to find innovative solutions to climate change, the composition of our country’s communities is fundamentally changing. Acknowledging the impact of this shift on specific communities, including communities reliant on coal, oil and natural gas, and power plant industries, the Biden Administration established the Energy Communities Interagency Working Group (IWG) to coordinate, identify, and deliver resources to communities to ensure our nation’s transition to a clean energy economy is equitable.

In April 2021, Brian J. Anderson, Ph.D., was named executive director of the Biden Administration’s IWG on Coal and Power Plant Communities and Economic Revitalization. Anderson, drawing from years of extensive expertise in innovation and technology development, led the development of the IWG’s initial report, which identified communities for prioritized funding, located potential funding in existing federal programs for immediate investments, and presented immediate steps for the IWG’s next year of supporting energy communities. The recommendations included in the 2021 report are currently driving revitalization efforts in Appalachia and the broader United States!

Anderson will join the Scott Institute for a Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, October 26th, from 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Bosch Spark Conference Room to discuss these experiences and his robust background in the energy sector. In addition to learning more about his service as executive director of IWG, hear about Anderson’s current work as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Senior Advisor on Energy Communities and his previous appointment as Director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)
