If you’re a faculty member, staff researcher, or student at CMU looking for help in turning your invention or idea into a business, someone will inevitably ask: “Have you met with Reed yet?”

Reed McManigle holds multiple official titles at Carnegie Mellon University, including Senior Manager of Business Development & Licensing at the Wilton E. Scott Energy Institute for Energy Innovation and Mentor in Residence in CMU’s Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC). However, his invaluable contributions to the CMU community since 2006 imparted the new title of ‘startup guru,’ as he impacted the careers of numerous student and faculty entrepreneurs.

With 30 years of experience managing academic intellectual property and assisting in the formation and early stages of technology-based startups, Reed McManigle uses his expertise to support the formation and growth of startup companies around university inventions from all departments. McManigle helps academics navigate customer discovery, developing relationships with investors, and more to realize their entrepreneurial potential.

“Reed has been a constant source of support and inspiration to many generations of student and faculty entrepreneurs,” says Faculty Affiliate and former Director of the Scott Institute Jay Whitacre. “Due in no small part to Reed’s efforts, CMU has become one of the most efficient universities in converting research support to startups and spin outs, and so much of this success is due to Reed’s focus and dedication.”

Reed is currently working with over thirty-five potential startups in the CTTEC pipeline. CTTEC guides CMU inventors as they work to move their research and technology out of the university and into the marketplace. With a robust team of professionals whose backgrounds intersect in STEM, law, business, and public policy, the passion and ambitions of the brilliant minds at Carnegie Mellon are in safe hands at CTTEC. Over the last ten years, CTTEC has launched 10-12 startup companies per year around university-owned inventions.
