By Katelyn Haas-Conrad

Officials from both the city of Dortmund (Germany) and Pittsburgh came to campus to visit the Scott Institute as part of a three day series addressing the future of climate change.  The cities received an award from the IURC. The award is to help facilitate transatlantic cooperation and exchange, addressing the challenges of climate change.

Scott Institute Director Jay Whitacre, Director Emeritus Granger Morgan and Faculty Affiliate Valerie Karplus all presented about the energy research being conducted at CMU. They discussed how the energy expertise at CMU relates to potential opportunities for collaboration with the City of Dortmund.

Areas of cooperation include:

  • Renovation Wave: Sustainable public procurement, food democracy or innovative tools to develop regional supply chains and efficient food logistics.
  • Education, Jobs & Skills: Linking private sector companies and start-ups for development and production of components for hydrogen technologies.
  • Mobility & Transport: Implementation of hydrogen technologies in mobility and logistics (local public transport, airport and port operations).
