Carnegie Mellon Top PA University Ranked in EPA Green Power List

By Julia Concolino, Marketing and Events Coordinator

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced Carnegie Mellon as one of its Top 30 College and University Green Power Users as part of the Green Power Partnership. Ranked 11th for overall Annual Green Power Usage, CMU came in second for Green Power Percentage of Total Electricity Use. CMU used more than 125M kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power in 2021, which represents 111% of its total power use. Since last year, CMU has increased its Green Power Percentage of Electricity Use from 105% to 111%.

By purchasing third-party certified, renewable energy certificates from national wind sources, the university receives 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. CMU continues to seek ways to reduce its carbon footprint. In addition to purchasing RECs for 100% of the annual electricity use, in October of 2017, the university contracted for 100% of the electricity supply for the next two years to come from a specifically named wind farm within PJM.

About the Green Power Partnership

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Green Power Partnership (GPP) in 2001 to encourage organizations to use green power voluntarily to protect human health and the environment. EPA’s Partners include a wide variety of leading organizations, including large corporations; small and medium-sized businesses; local, state, and federal governments; non-profit institutions; and colleges and universities.
