Course Number: 82-436

Classical Chinese emerged in the latter half of the first millennium BCE and continues to influence Chinese language and culture today. Knowledge of Classical Chinese is essential for understanding sophisticated modern Chinese texts, which frequently draw on classical allusions and linguistic structures. Ancient texts have also played a significant role in shaping Chinese cultural values, family traditions and society.

This course aims to develop students' skills in reading Classical Chinese while deepening their understanding of ancient Chinese culture, society and history. Through the study of classical texts, students will strengthen their ability to engage with the Chinese classics, enhance their proficiency in modern Chinese and broaden their understanding of Chinese culture.
