Undergraduate Summer Research Program in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics

The Undergraduate Summer Research Program in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics in the Department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is a 10-week program (May 31st to August 5th, 2022) that includes one week of molecular biology lab training and nine weeks as a member of a research lab in fields like: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology/Genetics, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Biochemistry/Biophysics, Neuroscience, Genomics, Computational Biology. The program also includes mentoring for entry into graduate programs and health profession programs. 

Applicants should be rising seniors. Students selected receive a stipend of $6000, university housing and travel support. To be reviewed by the Admissions Committee, the application package must be complete. The application package consists of:

  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member in your major department.

  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member in a science or math department.

  • Personal statement of purpose. This document should be a well-written, 1-2 page essay describing why you want to participate in the Undergraduate Summer Research Program in Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics in the Department of Biological Sciences at CMU, any previous research or laboratory experience, and your future goals. Please also describe the areas of biology represented in our department that are most interesting to you. We will take these interests into account when matching students to research labs.

The Admissions Committee will review all completed applications and selected applicants will be notified by April 11th.
