Stupakoff Scientific Achievement Award

This award of $5000 for research enrichment will be presented to each of two Biological Sciences Ph.D. students annually. The awardees will be selected based upon their record of research accomplishment and the projected research impact of their use of the award funds.

We are grateful to the donor whose contribution made this award possible, the late Semon Stupakoff (E’20). Mr. Stupakoff studied metallurgy at Carnegie Tech and received the alumni achievement award from Carnegie Mellon in 1979. Mr. Stupakoff made vast contributions to the production and development of improved ceramics and in the expansion of ceramics technology. The Stupakoff Ceramic and Manufacturing Company became a world leader in the production of highly technical ceramics. After his retirement, Mr. Stupakoff created a new company, the Latronics Corporation, which became a leader in production of ceramic to metal and glass to metal seals used in electronics.

Elizabeth W. Jones Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research in Experimental or Computational Biology

In 2008, the department lost a dear colleague, mentor and friend. Beth Jones was a wonderful scientist and scholar, but her real passion was for teaching and guiding undergraduate students. Jones believed that the best way to stimulate and excite students about science was to involve them within real, hands-on, original research. The result of her vision is that over 85% of biological sciences undergraduates experience valuable bench-side research, thereby stimulating scores of students to choose research careers. To honor her commitment to undergraduate research, the Elizabeth W. Jones Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research was created, made possible by the generous contribution of her colleague Robert Murphy, Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology. This award is given to honor the research efforts, be they experimental or computational, of a talented and dedicated undergraduate over their years at Carnegie Mellon.
