2018 Commencement Ceremony

On May 19th, 2018, 13 doctoral, 24 masters and 61 bachelors degrees were conferred at the Department of Biological Sciences commencement ceremony. Department Head Aaron Mitchell, Assistant Head for Graduate Affairs DJ Brasier, and Assistant Head for Undergraduate Affairs Becki Campanaro presided over the ceremony.

The diversity of the degrees awarded to the 81 graduating seniors included:

  • 28 B.S. in Biological Sciences
  • 13 B.S. in Neuroscience
  • 7 B.S. in Biological Sciences and Psychology
  • 5 B.A. in Biological Sciences
  • 4 B.S. in Computational Biology
  • 3 B.S. in Biological Sciences/Neuroscience Track
  • 1 B.S.A. in Neurobiology and Music Composition

Each year, the department recognizes an undergraduate's exceptional research efforts, be they experimental or computational, with the Elizabeth W. Jones Award. This year's recipient was Linqing Sun, who worked with Dr. Brett Kaufman for the last three years at the UMPC Heart, Lung and Vascular Medicine Institute.

There were also five students graduating with Honors in Research Biology and four Science and Humanities Scholars. The interdisciplinary nature of Carnegie Mellon University was highlighted in the additional majors and minors of the students. Biomedical Engineering, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Film and Media Studies, Francophone Studies, Hispanic Studies, Human-Computer Interaction, and Music Composition were just a few of the additional majors and minors.
