Designing and Administering Remote Assessments

Although the prospect of using traditional assessment practices this semester may be tempting, there are multiple reasons to consider adjusting your approach. Adjustments may include the modality, format, and design of your assessments. Such adjustments have the potential to help students better demonstrate their learning and to help instructors evaluate student work as effectively as possible. The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to generate complications and stress later in the semester when summative assessments occur, including final exams and assessments. Given this evolving situation and resultant uncertainty, course instructors are encouraged to think now about how they might be able to adjust their assessment strategies.

We know that remote assessment is new territory for many, and we acknowledge that there will be considerable variation in the assessment needs of different colleges and departments. If you would like to discuss particular aspects of your assessment approach or any other teaching or technology considerations, please email eberly-assist@andrew.cmu.edu to request a 1:1 consultation.

We offer this set of recommendations with a focus on hybrid/remote modalities. It is designed to supplement and extend the existing guidance on Assessing Students’ Learning and Performance from the Eberly Center.
