Obituary: Entrepreneur Curt Stone Advanced Quality of Life Technologies
Curt Stone, a Carnegie Mellon University executive-in-residence and the founder and former director of the QoLT Foundry, died suddenly Thursday evening. A memorial service was on Monday morning at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church.

Press Release: Google recognizes outstanding Computer Science students at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar
This past week, Google recognized two Carnegie Mellon students through its 2012 Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship program. The recipients are Sidra Alam and Hanan Mohammed Alshikhabobakr, both juniors in computer science. The students are among 40 young women who were chosen this year in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region. The students will receive a scholarship equivalent to 7,000 euros and an invitation to an all-expenses-paid Google Scholars' Retreat, which will be held in Zurich, Switzerland from June 17-20.

For more than a century, electric power has been produced and distributed using alternating current (AC) technology championed by George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Climate and Energy-Decision Making Center report that a competing direct current (DC) electrical power system, pioneered by Thomas A. Edison in the 1880s, may be the most economic way to power lights in commercial buildings, especially in buildings using solar photovoltaics.

Carnegie Mellon University's David Klahr, the Walter van Dyke Bingham Professor of Cognitive Development and Education Sciences, has spent his career investigating the relationship between children's cognitive development and educational practice. Klahr's influential work combines the two previously independent fields of study by joining a detailed understanding of children's reasoning and skill acquisition with the role of education in influencing and facilitating scientific explorations. Klahr's pioneering efforts are celebrated in a new book, "The Journey From Child To Scientist: Integrating Cognitive Development and the Education Sciences."

Researchers, including Carnegie Mellon University's Kathryn Roeder and the University of Pittsburgh's Bernie Devlin, have for the first time identified three genes that affect a child's risk for autism. Published in Nature, the series of studies suggests that autism spectrum disorders are caused by variations in multiple unrelated locations within the genome.
