Access & Resources for Students Taking a Leave

Students who are on leave or otherwise separated from the university maintain access to many valuable resources, including their Andrew account, certain campus buildings, and Pittsburgh Regional Transit. This page lists support resources available to help students make the most of their leave and ease their transition back to the university.

Students on leave may continue to access their Andrew Accounts and SIO.

Student Academic Success Center

Students on leave and those returning from a leave retain access to the Student Academic Success Center, which focuses on creating spaces for students to engage in their coursework and approach learning through individual and group programming and tutoring options. A wide variety of opportunties is offered through the center that can help students returning from a leave of absence to readjust to campus life and academics, such as academic coaching, effective communication strategies, accommodations for those with disabilities, and language support. Reach out to the Student Academic Success Center at success@andrew.cmu.edu.

Career & Professional Development Center

Students on or returning from leave may access services through the Career & Professional Development Center (CPDC), Carnegie Mellon's career services center. Students wishing to explore career options and professional development oppotunties, or seeking advice about finding work, are encouraged to reach out. Students may also access Handshake, an application listing CPDC events, fairs, and enagement opportunities. More information is available on the CPDC website

Students taking a leave retain access to campus buildings, including borrowing privileges at the CMU Libraries, as well as access to computing labs and the gym.

Students on leave may not live in university-managed housing (including Greek housing), access residence hall maker-spaces, CFA studios and theaters, or practice spaces.

Counseling & Psychological Services (CaPS)

CaPs addresses the mental health needs of students by providing a safe, confidential environment to talk about personal or academic concerns. CaPS helps students improve their psychological health by facilitating insight and fostering deeper understanding of their personal struggles needed to make better choices for themselves. Services at CaPS are developmental in nature, aimed at supporting students in the moment and in their personal growth and maturation over time. Students considering taking a leave and those who are planning to return or have just returned are encouraged to reach out to CaPS for support. Please note that while students currently on leave may consult with CaPS, clinical services are only available to currently enrolled students.

Disability Resources

The Office of Disability Resources works with students to provide responsive accomodations and resources including physical, digital, and programatic access. Students returning from leave are welcome to reach out to Disability Resources for consultation and support. More information is available on the Disability Resources website.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Students on leave and those who have withdrawn from the university will still be covered by SHIP provided the plan was purchased prior to the leave/withdrawal. Should the plan expire while the student is still on leave, that student will be unable to purchase new insurance through SHIP until they return to the university. More information about SHIP is available on the University Health Services website.

University Health Services (UHS)

UHS provides confidental health services to Carnegie Mellon Students and supports a campus culture of health and wellbeing. UHS provides medical care and Comprehensive Care Management, a service which helps students identify and coordinate services to meet their health and academic support needs. Students taking a leave are welcome to contact UHS for consultations, but are unable to make appointments for clinical services. Learn more about UHS

Students on leave retain access to the Computing Services Help Desk and may continue to download software licensed by the university.

Students on leave are ineligible to borrow emergency student loans. Those with questions about finances are encouraged to reach out to The HUB by emailing thehub@andrew.cmu.edu. More specific questions regarding financial aid may be directed to the student's HUB liaison

Students taking a leave may still use their CMU ID cards to ride Pittsburgh Regional Transit (formerly Pittsburgh Port Authority Transit).

Students taking a leave may not participate in paid or unpaid campus research, nor may they continue to participate in any research project they were involved in before the leave began. Students on leave are also not permitted to hold federal or non-federal work study jobs.
