Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon encourages our students, faculty, and staff to use more sustainable and alternative transportation options to commute to campus and to get around town. Here are ways CMU supports these options:

The League of American Bicyclists recognizes CMU as a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly University.

The Carnegie Mellon campus has many bike parking options. Visit the Map of Campus Bike Rack Locations. There are also bike-repair stations at three locations around campus (Hamburg Hall, East Campus Garage, and Tepper).

All users of personal wheeled vehicles are subject to the university's Personal Wheeled Vehicle Transportation Policy while on CMU's campus. More information on the Parking & Transportation pages.

Celebrate Bike to Campus Week each September!

Other Resources:

All CMU students and employees can ride Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) for free using a CMU ID card. Upon entering a bus, just tap your ID! This works on PRT buses, light rail cars, and inclines.

Those that need to get to Oakland, Squirrel Hill, and Shadyside can use CMU's shuttles and evening escort service, as well the University of Pittsburgh's shuttle services, to get around campus and neighboring areas.

Shuttles are free to students and employees – just show your CMU ID upon boarding. For details on CMU routes visit the Shuttle Schedule page.

Zipcar is the world’s largest car-sharing program, offering self-service, on-demand rental cars by the hour or day. Learn more by visiting the Parking and Transportation Zipcar information page.

Carnegie Mellon has several electric vehicle charging stations on our Pittsburgh campus. Download the ChargePoint app to use the stations. There is a four-hour charging limit per vehicle, per day.

Please visit CMU's Parking and Transportation Services website for details on EV charging station locations.

Sharing a ride to work with a colleague is a great way to reduce cost, wear and tear on a vehicle, and reduce emissions.

CMU encourages parking permit holders who share a ride or carpool with other members of the campus community by offering a discount on the monthly parking permit rate. Visit the parking permits pages for more information.
