Study Abroad Programs and Scholarships

Explore new places, engage with new cultures and immerse yourself in one of our seven summer study abroad programs.

We encourage all students — particularly LCAL majors and minors — to make study abroad part of their CMU experience. In addition to our seven summer programs, opportunities to study abroad are available through CMU's Study Abroad Office.

Scholarships & Funding

LCAL is committed to making study abroad accessible and affordable for our students. A variety of scholarships and grants are available to help offset the cost of participating in a study abroad program.

LCAL Departmental Scholarships

LCAL offers departmental scholarships to students of any major participating in one of our seven summer programs.

LCAL-declared majors and minors may also receive departmental scholarships for study abroad programs outside of LCAL’s summer offerings.

All LCAL-declared majors and minors are guaranteed a departmental scholarship for their study abroad experience.

The scholarship cycle for summer 2027, fall 2027 and spring 2028 will open fall 2026. Check back later this fall for application details, eligibility requirements and the official deadline.

CMU & External Funding

As a Carnegie Mellon University student, you may also be eligible for CMU scholarships and grants, as well as external funding opportunities, to help cover the costs of your study abroad program. These resources can supplement LCAL departmental funding and may be available regardless of your program or destination.

We encourage all students to research their funding options early and apply broadly. Every scholarship or grant can help make studying abroad more accessible.
