Bio
Mathieu Berbiguier is a scholar with a deep-rooted passion for Korean Studies. He recently obtained his doctorate in Asian Languages and Cultures, and as a long-time K-pop fan, he has been interested in observing how others enjoyed it, as well as in reflecting on his experiences as a K-pop fan living in France, South Korea and the U.S. In his research, he examines the power dynamics between K-pop fans inside and outside Korea, showing how these converge toward a contrasting, imagined sense of authenticity in K-pop. He is currently working on his book monograph, currently entitled K-pop Nation(alism): Narratives of Authenticity after the Korean Wave.
At CMU, Dr. Berbiguier engages with students from diverse backgrounds, fostering inclusive academic spaces where Korean popular culture can be a bridge to language learning, critical thinking and digital literacy. His research continues to focus on the global impact of K-pop, particularly how expressions of authenticity, national identity and language are navigated within fandoms. He is also dedicated to integrating Korean popular culture within the broader field of Korean studies, contributing to its visibility and growth on campus.
Within LCAL, Dr. Berbiguier's faculty position is funded by a grant from The Korea Foundation. He also serves as co-coordinator of the Korean Studies program.
