Guidlines and Regulations For General Use Of the UC
Procedures pertaining to the operation of the University Center and the hours of operation are established by the University Center Management Team with consultation of the University Center Advisory Board. The Management Team includes representatives from University Center Administration, Dining Services, Retail Services, Security, Athletics, University Advancement, and Student Activities. The Advisory Board consists of representatives of the Carnegie Mellon community, including students, faculty, and staff.
Alcoholic Beverages
All university policies relating to alcohol use and social host responsibility will be firmly adhered to within the University Center (on-line reference:http://www.cmu.edu/policies/documents/DrugAlcohol.html.) The university firmly supports all laws relating to alcohol within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In accordance with these stipulations, alcohol will be permitted only at approved social events within the University Center. Alcohol must be purchased and served thrugh University Caering. Alcohol is prohibited in hallways and public areas.
Display Case Space
Display case space, located on the first floor, can be reserved through the University Center Scheduling Office (see University Center Poster Policy). A form must be submitted including information about the event, purpose and content that will be displayed. Any information that is displayed or publicized must pertain an event that is affiliated with the University Center. Reservations must be made at least one week in advance and can be reserved for a period of seven (7) days.
Dogs, Cats, and other Animals
Dogs, cats and other pets and animals are prohibited from the premises of the University Center unless providing assistance to a disabled individual.
Food Deliveries for other than Catered Events
Food deliveries for other than catered events must be made at the Information Desk. A representative from the organization must be present to pay and collect the delivery.
Posting Printed Materials/Decorations
Printed materials may be posted only on designated bulletin boards within the University Center. Nothing may be posted on the walls, ceilings, glass, or other surfaces of the University Center without the consent of the University Center Scheduling Office. All materials must conform to the University Center Poster Policy (see University Center Poster Policy). All decorations are limited to table decorations. Helium balloons must be removed immediately following an event. Failure to do so may result in charges to the event sponsor.
Scheduling of Classes
Regularly scheduled academic classes can not be held in the University Center except those requiring the use of recreational facilities (for example racquetball, swimming, etc.). McConomy Auditorium and Rangos Ballroom may be scheduled for examinations.
Skateboards, Cycles
In accordance with university policy, as detailed in the Student Handbook, the use of skateboards and in-line skates is prohibited in the building and on the pedestrian ramps adjacent to the building. Cycles of any sort are not permitted in the building.
Smoking
The University Center is a smoke-free building.
Space Restrictions
The maximum capacity specified for reserved spaces cannot be exceeded (see Room Specifications). No furniture can be added or removed from the existing reservable spaces.
Student Organizations
Student organizations that would like to reserve space for events and meetings within the University Center must be recognized by Student Government (see Recognition of Student Organizations). When making space reservations, student organizations may be required to provide a valid list of all the members that belong to the organization.
Vendors and Vending Space
Table space for distribution and sales by university and/or outside vendors is available for use in designated public spaces in the University Center and adjacent patios (see Vendor Regulations). All persons using table space must remain within the designated area. Vendors that are granted space will be treated as guests of the university and expected to adhere to all applicable university and University Center policies and procedures. The event sponsor or vendor is responsible for compliance with all laws and regulations of the City of Pittsburgh and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regarding all items sold. All materials distributed within the University Center or at adjacent public spaces must meet the standards specified in the Student Handbook. Student organizations that are interested in sponsoring an outside vendor should contact the Office of Student Activities for more information. No alcoholic beverages or tobacco products may be distributed in any common area within or adjacent to the University Center.
Violation of Policies
The director of the University Center may deny any and all University Center privileges to any individual or group in the event of any violation of University Center policies or procedures. Written appeals are accepted by the University Center Advisory Board.
