Build students' teamwork skills with OLI collaboration modules

Harty, M.

CollaborativeU has been used in classes in every college at CMU. It teaches introductory teamwork, focusing on basic diversity communication and conflict skills. It is designed to embed in courses with a significant team project component, and is assigned as homework when student teams are formed. The experience sets expectations for high-performance teams, and research has shown that it improves students’ understanding of and attitudes towards teamwork, leading to higher peer review scores and greater efficacy. The 2-3 hour experience includes both interactive, scenario-based online learning and practice, and in-real-life team activities. The sequel, ConflictU, helps students learn to resolve conflict effectively in team projects using a process of interest-based negotiation and the skills learned in CollaborativeU. Videos and hands-on demonstrations of the modules will be available.
