Teaching and Learning Summit 2018

Note: we know you may be teaching or have other obligations during some of these time slots. We encourage you to drop in for any of the segments that you can!

12:30-1:20pm

We have created a new type of showcase with the goal of highlighting the interesting things instructors do in their course, whether it be a “wicked, cool assignment” or a fun, in-class activity -- things that other instructors could potentially adapt for their context. There will also be three special Lightning Talks, where participants can experience and engage hands-on with the future of technology-enhanced learning, including virtual reality, instrumented classrooms, and Arduinos.

"Imagining the Future of Higher Education: the critical role of instructors and pragmatic strategies for course design”

Regardless of discipline, what would it look like to design our courses for the most pressing needs of our present and future? As instructors, are we each doing the most we can to prepare students for a future reshaped by powerful challenges and opportunities? The discourse and events of recent years suggest that educators need a new narrative for the role we can play shaping a sustainable future, one that prioritizes both integrative learning (cultivating the traits that are most human) and inclusive excellence (seeking success for the broadest range of students). In this space of integration and inclusion, every educator (instructors of all kinds, academic staff) has a critical role. This interactive presentation will explore the ways individual instructors can contribute via course design and classroom instruction. Participants will leave with pragmatic strategies for implementing engaged learning, collecting data on teaching effectiveness, and meeting the demands that are now being placed on higher education.

Created by popular demand, these facilitated roundtable discussions focus on time-saving and effective strategies for a common teaching challenge. This is a chance to share existing strategies that have worked for you, hear from your colleagues across campus about things that they do, and collectively generate new ideas. You can help set the agenda: during registration, you will have a chance to select your top two topics from the list below. You will be sorted into tables based on those choices, and your corresponding topic and table will be put on your Summit nametag.

What can I do to...?

  • ...best engage students during class?

  • ...make group work work? ...for students? …for instructors?

  • ...reach students with diverse backgrounds?

  • ...design a transformative interdisciplinary learning experience?

  • ...develop student creativity and critical thinking?

  • ...help students develop their oral, verbal, and/or visual communication skills?

3:00-4:20PM

How have CMU instructors innovated to improve learning? This segment features 5 invited speakers, each with one or more transferable elements one could adopt or adapt across teaching contexts. In this high-octane session, each presenter has 15 slides, each of which auto-advances after 20 seconds (i.e., a 5-minute presentation), to present the essential features of their innovative, effective teaching strategy. Following the speakers, there will be a brief table discussion.

Teaching as Research Posters.
These posters feature qualitative and/or quantitative data on student learning outcomes. Data can come from: (1) courses or classroom research at CMU; (2) assessments of educational programs at CMU; or (3) learning science research targeting undergraduate, graduate, pre-K, or K-12 students. Click here for a list of presenters and their abstracts...

Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) Demos.
Demonstrations feature how CMU faculty, graduate students, and staff use instructional technology home-grown at CMU or developed elsewhere. Demos may include students showcasing their work or experiences using the technologies. Click here for a list of presenters and their abstracts...

Vote for your favorite TAR poster and TEL Demo! You will receive ballot when you pick up your nametag, which you can use to vote for your favorite presentation(s). Amy Burkert, Vice Provost for Education, will announce the People’s Choice winners as part of her closing remarks at the end of the Summit. Winners will receive a small prize and substantial glory.
