Building a Prototype Mindset
Larson, E. L.
What might prototyping and fabrication teach us about empathy? In digiTOOL, a 6-week long IDeATe mini, we explore digital fabrication tools and the processes needed to make something physical. digiTOOL is open to all skills, ages, and departments. The diversity of student expertise is reflected in unique course modules. We explore prototyping through hands-on making, interviewing, philosophical texts, 3D modeling, redefining core concepts in common language, sketching, and class discussions. In this lightning talk, I would share the prototyping process students use to create their final project. This process starts with peer interviewing (empathy building), moves to brainstorming (ideation), prototyping, CAD modeling, and digital fabrication. The course culminates in a student-driven project that solves a problem through the act of holding. Student projects are all fabricated with laser cutters and 3D printers. Previous projects have held water, time, anxiety, and iPhone dongles.
