Five graduate students in the School of Computer Science have received Siebel Scholars awards for 2022. Karan Ahuja, Priya Donti, Yasmine Kotturi, Ryan Shi and Kayo Yin will each receive $35,000 as part of the program.

  • Ahuja is a Ph.D. candidate in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) whose research focuses on machine learning and sensing. Using computer vision, signal processing and applied machine learning, Ahuja creates novel sensing and interaction technologies.
  • Donti, a Ph.D. candidate in the Computer Science and Engineering and Public Policy departments, focuses on using machine learning to tackle climate change. Her research incorporates the physics and hard constraints associated with power grids into neural networks to guarantee the safety of the systems, and to increase their efficiency through machine learning. Donti co-founded Climate Change AI and was recently named to MIT Technology Review's list of 35 Innovators Under 35
  • Kotturi, a Ph.D. candidate in the HCII, focuses on co-designing a more inclusive future of work for minority workers. Kotturi creates peer-to-peer software systems that leverage both human and machine intelligence to scaffold skill, identity and career development among individuals engaged in nontraditional, alternative working arrangements.
  • Shi, a Ph.D. candidate in the Institute for Software Research, studies how AI can help people. His research areas include online learning, game theory and reinforcement learning. Shi develops AI-based tools to help with the operations of nonprofit organizations in food security, wildlife conservation and public health.
  • Yin is a master's degree student in the Language Technologies Institute, where she researches multilingual natural language processing. Her long-term research goal is to break down communication barriers between people and between computers and people through NLP technologies. She wants to improve how computers understand and respond to different languages so more people can benefit from the technology.

CMU Offers New Privacy Engineering Options for Working Professionals

Cylab banner

Starting this fall, CMU is offering two flexible options for privacy engineering education and training. The first allows working professionals to pursue the master of science in Information Technology-Privacy Engineering (MSIT-PE) degree part-time and remotely. Depending on the number of courses taken per semester, the part-time degree program can be completed in between two and four years.

For working professionals who cannot commit to a part-time master's degree program, CMU offers an additional option: a privacy engineering certificate that can be obtained remotely. The certificate program comprises a combination of mini-tutorials, class discussions and hands-on exercises aimed at delivering the fundamentals of privacy engineering.

"The idea behind the privacy engineering certificate is that working professionals can learn the key concepts in privacy engineering on the weekend over the course of just two months," said Norman Sadeh, co-director of CMU's Privacy Engineering Program, a member of CyLab and a professor of computer science in the Institute for Software Research.

The certificate program is available to individual students as well as cohorts of 15-25 students from a single organization.

Save the Date for Tartan Community Day, Nov. 5

Tartan Community Day is a day for students, faculty, staff and alumni to take a break from the daily norm and to connect, restore and play, in ways that are most meaningful to you.

This year’s theme is connection, in all of its various forms, and the joy that comes from it. Connection can be big or it can be small, rambunctious or quiet, a moment or a lasting journey. It can be a connection to oneself, to a friend, to community and so much more.

During a time when change has been constant and life has presented challenges, we find joy through connection – by celebrating being on campus in a shared space whether in person or virtual, nurturing ourselves through self-care and self-exploration, and lifting each other up as we strengthen CMU’s diverse and strongly knit community.

On this third annual Tartan Community Day, we will come together, to discover the power that can come from promises made and kept, to play games and have fun, in person or in a remote setting based on personal preference, and to take the time to check in with ourselves and others so that we can restore, re-center and rejuvenate for all the days ahead.

CMU a Host Institution Sponsor for Virtual Sustainability Conference, Oct. 12-14

Carnegie Mellon is once again a host institution sponsor for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education’s (ASHE) Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education, Oct. 12-14.  As a host institution sponsor, CMU students, faculty and staff can register for free.

The Global Conference on Sustainability in Higher Education brings together sustainability leaders from around the world in a virtual format to share effective models, policies, research, collaborations and transformative actions that advance sustainability in higher education and surrounding communities. This year’s theme is “The Future is … .”

Presenters and a diverse group of attendees, including faculty, students, sustainability staff, administrators, business partners, nonprofit representatives, government officials and community members, will examine:

  • How does higher education need to change to effectively meet the grand challenges of our time?
  • How can higher education institutions demonstrate the potential for a resilient, equitable, and sustainable future in the operation of their campuses?
  • How can higher education support students and employees struggling with anxiety about the future and equip them to better navigate this future?
  • How can higher education institutions help their communities prepare for future crises?

There will be nine keynote presentations, live sessions and networking opportunities Oct. 12-14. Those sessions and additional pre-recorded sessions will be available on-demand and can be watched at any time through December 31.
