Two MCS Students Win Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing Awards
Biological sciences sophomore Hannah Daniel and Science and Humanities Scholar first-year student Qianou (Christina) Ma both placed first in their respective categories for the 2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards. Daniel's poem "They Sat in the Back" placed first in the college poetry category and was one of three winning pieces that responded to the Tree of Life shooting. Ma won first place in the college prose category for her piece "Bravery," a reflection on standing up for equality.
For two decades, thousands of high school and college students have put their personal experiences with discrimination in the spotlight as participants in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards at Carnegie Mellon University.
This year, a record number of schools were represented: 21 high schools and eight colleges and universities.
Daniels and Ma will be recognized among all of this year's winners at the 20th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Writing Awards ceremony on Monday, Jan. 21, in the Cohon University Center's Rangos Ballroom at 5 p.m. There will be a reception starting at 4:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The awards ceremony will feature the student winners reading their award-winning pieces and musical performances.
