Family members should plan on staying at a local hotel and come back to campus on Sunday for a full day of programming which will end around 5 p.m. Students will be able to reside in their residence hall on Saturday.

Welcome Day:  Sunday, August 20

There will be a wide array of programming throughout Sunday for family members and new students including individual college events, lunch, resource fair, tours, specialized programming, etc. Orientation will formally begin for new students with dinner on campus.

Orientation Programming:  Monday, August 21 – Sunday, August 27

The programming from Monday through Sunday is for new students.

Going away to college is a big transition and the Orientation program at Carnegie Mellon is designed to make that transition easier for all first year and transfer students. Orientation is a mandatory weeklong program organized by the Office of Orientation and Family Programs and current Carnegie Mellon students to introduce incoming students to each other, the campus, academic life and the local community. Over 250 current students will welcome new students to campus and will work hard throughout Orientation to make sure it’s a memorable week and a great introduction to life at Carnegie Mellon.

Move-in to the residence halls will occur on Saturday August 19. More information about the move-in process will be sent later in the summer. The programs and events on Sunday, August 20 will be geared to both students and family members and will include information sessions, a resource fair, lunch, college meetings and an overview of student services.  Orientation programming will then be exclusively focused on our new students on Sunday evening beginning at dinner and continue from Monday, August 21 through Sunday, August 27. The first day of classes will be on Monday, August 28.

Please note that students will not be permitted to move into the residence halls prior to Saturday, August 19.  Students and family members will receive detailed information about move-in and Orientation during the summer months.

NOTE: We will welcome new international students as they move in with their first year classmates on Saturday, August 19.  International students must attend a mandatory immigration check-in, which will take place during the Welcome Day activities on Sunday, August 20.  The Office of International Education will provide additional details about this session and other sessions of particular relevance to international students and their families in the coming months.
