Two Department of Mathematical Sciences faculty members, Irene Fonseca and Konstantin Tikhomirov were invited to give presentations at the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), held virtually in July.

The ICM, hosted every four years by the International Mathematics Union, is the largest event in the field, and the individuals who are invited to speak are considered to be among the world’s top mathematicians. During the course of the meeting a number of prestigious awards are given, including the Fields Medals.

Irene Fonseca, the Kavčić-Moura University Professor of Mathematics and director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis, was invited to present during the partial differential equations track. Her talk focused on variational models for phase separation in heterogeneous media.

Tikhomirov, an associate professor of mathematical sciences, was invited to present during the analysis track. In his talk he discussed recent developments in the study of quantitative invertibility in the non-Hermitian setting and reviewed some application of this research.
