Veterans Education Benefits

Since 2010, Carnegie Mellon University has been named a Military Friendly School by GIJobs.com. Our goal is to provide the best possible services to students eligible for Veterans Education Benefits.

The University Registrar's Office provides services to veterans and their dependents who are eligible for Veterans Education Benefits under the Montgomery G.I. Bill®, Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, and Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program. In addition, Carnegie Mellon participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program for those who are 100% eligible for benefits under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. We serve as a liaison between the veteran and the VA Regional Processing Office.

Application Instructions for Current Students

In order to use Veterans Education Benefits,you must be an admitted Carnegie Mellon student. Veterans Affairs determines the amount of benefits a student can receive; therefore, we cannot estimate benefit amounts. Please contact the VA at 1-888-442-4551 to find out the amount you are eligible to receive.

  • The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) determines eligibility and payment amounts for all recipients of Veterans Education Benefits. The University Registrar's Office does not have access to view payment or eligibility information.
  • All students who receive benefits from the VA must notify the University Registrar's Office each semester so that we can certify your academic enrollment.
  • Tuition assistance from the Department of Defense is not administered by the VA. The Student Accounts Office handles most tuition assistance inquiries.
  • For ROTC scholarship/information, please contact CMU's Steel City Naval ROTC unit

Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2019, Section 103

In compliance with Section 103 of the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018, Carnegie Mellon University will not impose the following penalties to covered individuals¹ due to the delayed disbursement of funding from the Department of Veteran Affairs:

  • preventing nor delaying the student’s enrollment,
  • the assessment of late fees,
  • the denial of access to any resources available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fees bills to the institution, including but not limited to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities,
  • or require the student to secure alternative or additional funding

To qualify for this provision, such students are required to:

  • Produce a Certificate of Eligibility²;
  • Provide written request to be certified;
  • Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as required by the Primary School Certifying Official.

This provision ends on the earlier of the following dates:

  • The date on which payment from the VA is made to the institution
  • 90 days after the date the institution certified tuition and fees following the receipt of the Certificate of Eligibility
  1. Covered individual is defined as any individual who is entitled to educational assistance under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment, or Chapter 33, Post 9/11 G.I. Bill®
  2. Certificate of Eligibility is defined as a Certificate of Eligibility, a Statement of Benefits, or a Tungsten Network Purchase Order.
