Launching the Global Search for Dean of the Mellon College of Science

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I am pleased to officially announce the global search for the next Dean of the Mellon College of Science. This position was previously held by Rebecca Doerge, who became Provost at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in August.

Brimming with innovative thinkers, world-class researchers and remarkable students, the Mellon College of Science (MCS) continues to transform scientific discovery and lead groundbreaking work and research. I am excited to launch this search for the next leader of MCS, who will be well-positioned to build on the momentum of the future of science initiative, which includes the construction of a next-generation Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences, the Carnegie Mellon University Cloud Lab — the first of its kind in an academic setting — and research that is advancing our potential for worldchanging breakthroughs.

Keith Webster, the Helen and Henry Posner, Jr. Dean of the University Libraries, and Barbara Shinn-Cunningham, director of the Carnegie Mellon Neuroscience Institute and the George A. and Helen Dunham Cowan Professor of Auditory Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Psychology, and Electrical & Computer Engineering, will co-chair a search committee of faculty, staff and students from across the university:

  • Bruce Armitage, Professor and Department Head, Chemistry and Co-Director, Center for Nucleic Acids Science and Technology;
  • Maggie Braun, Teaching Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs;
  • Keith Cook, The David Edward Schramm Professor and Head, Biomedical Engineering;
  • Byron Daniel, Doctoral Student, Physics and Graduate Student Assembly Representative;
  • Payton Downey, Senior Undergraduate Student, Chemistry;
  • Nancy Felix, Associate Dean for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives;
  • N. Luisa Hiller, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences;
  • Po-Shen Loh, Professor of Mathematical Sciences;
  • Jian Ma, Ray and Stephanie Lane Professor of Computational Biology, School of Computer Science;
  • Rachel Mandelbaum, Professor of Physics;
  • Scott Mory, Vice President for University Advancement;
  • Annette Vincent, Teaching Professor in Biological Sciences, CMU-Q;
  • Michael Young, Associate Professor, Mathematical Sciences and Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and
  • Becky Culyba, Vice Provost for Operations and Strategic Initiatives (ex officio).

In collaboration with executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates, the committee will identify qualified individuals, encourage nominations and applications, and ensure a diverse applicant pool. Throughout the fall semester, they will engage stakeholders across campus to obtain input on the role and candidates, aiming to fill the position for the next academic year. To learn more about this role and the search process, as well as to submit confidential inquiries, nominations or applications, visit the search website or email Russell Reynolds Associates.

I want to thank MCS’s leadership team for their partnership in guiding the college during this transition period, especially Curtis A. Meyer who will continue to serve as interim dean throughout the search. I look forward to working with the college, as well as members across our community, to identify the next individual to build on MCS’s momentum and vision for the future of science at CMU.

Sincerely,

Jim Garrett
Provost and Chief Academic Officer
