Announcing the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

It is my sincere pleasure to announce that following a comprehensive global search, Dr. Kristina Wong Davis has been selected as CMU’s inaugural vice provost for enrollment management. Dr. Wong Davis is a national leader in higher education admissions and enrollment and we could not be more delighted to have her join our team as the university looks to the future of recruiting and engaging an exceptional student body. Dr. Wong Davis will officially begin her new role on June 1, 2023.

Dr. Wong Davis joins us from Purdue University, where she has served as vice provost for enrollment management, leading the areas of the Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar, Division of Financial Aid, Enrollment Management Analysis and Reporting, and Enrollment Management Strategic Communications and Initiatives.

Over the course of her career, Dr. Wong Davis has held several leadership positions at higher education institutions and boards across the country. She served as director of admissions for the University of California San Diego and as director of outreach and recruitment for Ohio State University. She was director of admissions with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar and served in several roles overseeing and managing initiatives for transfer, international and undergraduate recruitment efforts at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Wong Davis is a College Board Trustee and is a member of the College Board Admissions Research Consortium Advisory Committee, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the National Association for College Admissions Counseling, the International Association for College Admissions Counseling, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

Dr. Wong Davis is a passionate leader in her field and an advocate for students. Her demonstrated values align with CMU’s mission to provide an exceptional experience to all prospective and incoming students. Her achievements make it evident that she is committed to excellence in every step of a student’s educational life cycle, even before they step foot on campus. Her clear professional purpose and vision, as well as her deep understanding of enrollment trends, make her well suited to take on this newly developed role here at CMU.

This new role will enhance CMU’s enrollment and admission strategies in the rapidly evolving higher education landscape. As vice provost for enrollment management, Dr. Wong Davis will play a critical role in how we approach demographic shifts, access and affordability and the broader higher education market. By providing thought leadership and data-informed best practices, she will collaborate across all aspects of the field, including marketing, enrollment, student success and outcomes. Dr. Wong Davis will also oversee the integration of the offices of Admission and Enrollment Services. As part of this integration, Lisa Krieg will continue to report to me in her role as an associate vice president with a focus on global strategic initiatives, institutional accreditation and compliance. I am grateful to Lisa for her many years of leadership overseeing the Enrollment Services division’s many successes and for supporting Dr. Wong Davis as she onboards with the team.

Following Dean of Admission Mike Steidel’s retirement announcement last year, the university launched a search to identify CMU’s next leader of admission. I extend my gratitude to the search advisory committee and its co-chairs, Becky Culyba, vice provost for operations and strategic initiatives, and Michael Murphy, distinguished service professor and executive director of the Center for Leadership Studies, for their leadership in considering an exceptionally strong pool of candidates. Their thoroughness led to this appointment, which I feel best positions the university’s future in enrollment and admissions practices. Working with the executive search firm WittKieffer, the committee gathered input from students, faculty and staff from across the university to understand our needs, and to align those with a leader equipped to address them. Thank you to everyone who participated in the process — your input is truly valued. I also thank Mike for his many years of leadership at CMU and for helping us ensure a smooth leadership transition for undergraduate admission.

Please join me in congratulating Kris and welcoming her to our CMU community!

Sincerely,

Jim Garrett
