Reappointment of Michael Trick as the Dean of CMU Qatar

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Michael Trick, the Harry B. and James H. Higgins Professor of Operations Research, as dean of the Carnegie Mellon University campus in Qatar (CMU-Q).

Since his appointment as dean in 2017, Dean Trick has grown the CMU-Q program, expanding both its course offerings and enrollment. CMU-Q graduates have had an increasing impact on education, research, creativity and entrepreneurship in Qatar and around the world. In 2021 alone, we celebrated CMU-Q students winning the Qatar National Arabic Debate Championship, the campus offered a new coding program for nearly 200 pre-college students to learn basic programming skills, and CMU-Q  researchers used artificial intelligence and a fleet of autonomous marine robots to better explore the marine environment around Qatar. Under Dean Trick’s leadership, CMU-Q expanded its robust program offerings while ensuring the campus community members thrived.

As Dean Trick enters his second term, I look forward to continuing our strong partnership as he leads CMU-Q and its undergraduate programs in biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems. More than 400 students from 53 countries call Carnegie Mellon’s Qatar campus home and we are so proud to have this creative and collaborative campus as part of our CMU community.

Dean Trick’s reappointment follows the evaluation of an ad hoc committee charged with reviewing his performance as a leader and administrator. I want to express my gratitude to the following members of the committee for their thorough review and recommendations:
