Preparations and Registration Week for Fall 2021

This message was sent to current Pittsburgh-based students only.

Dear Students,

The university has been preparing for the new academic year and we are eager to welcome you back to campus. Earlier this spring, we announced plans to resume operations to support full in-person experiences, both inside and outside the classroom. We continue to expand these plans, are optimistic for the fall, and look forward to welcoming our students and community back to campus.

In-Person Preparations
As you prepare for registration week, which begins June 7 for continuing students, we want to remind you that Carnegie Mellon plans to deliver courses that require in-person attendance, and the student experience for the Fall 2021 Semester will be almost entirely in person. In fact, when you review the schedule of classes, you will see a new mode listed — in-person expected (IPE) — where you are expected to attend in person.

It is important that you make advance plans to be in Pittsburgh ahead of the start of classes on August 30, 2021. For students coming from outside the United States, you should plan to apply for visas and make travel arrangements to join your classmates in person for the fall semester.

For those of you joining us from outside the United States, we recognize there may be a number of you who might have difficulty receiving visa appointments in time to arrive for the fall semester. In these cases, we remain committed to your educational experience and academic progress.

Your academic or program advisor will be able to provide guidance based on your specific academic program. However, please know that there will be a limited number of remote-only courses available, which is a different situation than the past two semesters.

We all are eager to return to a more traditional campus life and look forward to sharing more information this summer about what to expect as we build a robust student experience. As I've said before, I am grateful for your resilience these past 14+ months and continue to be inspired by your determination and hard work. For those of us who have been on campus recently, it just isn't the same without you and we look forward to welcoming you to the Pittsburgh campus this fall!

Sincerely,

James H. Garrett, Jr.
