Carnegie Mellon University

January 23, 2020

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

Each year the university reviews the cost of providing a world-class CMU education and sets tuition, room and board and associated fees accordingly. I am writing to update the campus community that the Board of Trustees approved an overall 3.2 percent increase to the undergraduate cost of attendance for the 2020-21 academic year. Please note that graduate tuition rates are set by individual schools and colleges at the program level.

Undergraduate tuition will be $57,560 and the rates for room and board are $9,210 for a standard double room and $6,340 for a traditional first-year meal plan. Approved rates for other associated fees may be found at the Student Financial Services website.

We recognize that any increase to our tuition and fees adds to the significant financial investment made by our students and their families. We are committed to expand access to a Carnegie Mellon education by making it as affordable as possible. Next year we expect Carnegie Mellon’s contribution to financial aid for undergraduate students to increase 3.8 percent.

You can find updated information about financial aid, cost of attendance, and the role of tuition in operating revenue and educational expenses in the university’s annual budget at the CMU Enrollment Bulletin website.

Sincerely,

James H. Garrett, Jr.
Provost
Thomas Lord Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering
