Carnegie Mellon University

June 13, 2019

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Richard Scheines as dean of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Keith Webster as dean of University Libraries.

Since his appointment as dean in 2014, Richard has advocated passionately for the humanities, and has worked tirelessly to continuously improve the student experience in the college. His efforts have led to the implementation of groundbreaking, interdisciplinary academic programs in behavioral economics and neuroscience at Dietrich College, interdisciplinary grand challenge seminars for first-year students, and a near doubling of the number of undergraduate applicants to the college. Richard also has been a champion for increasing fundraising efforts, and has been highly effective in creating a new advancement team for Dietrich College that has already helped to support new scholarships and research initiatives.

Keith, who has served as dean since 2013, also will continue in his role as director of Emerging and Integrative Media Initiatives, a post he has held since 2015. A forward-thinking and transformational leader, Keith has ensured that the University Libraries add value to Carnegie Mellon through enhanced programming, while fostering a culture of engagement and support among the faculty. He has successfully repositioned our library system as a trusted academic partner at the heart of our work at Carnegie Mellon, with substantial progress in implementing a new library management system, and a cluster of digital science products to support research and collaboration.

I look forward to working closely with both Dean Scheines and Dean Webster during their second terms, as we focus on devising strategic initiatives that will enrich the academic mission of Dietrich College and University Libraries even more. Please join me in congratulating them on their dean reappointments.

Regards,

James H. Garrett, Jr.
