Plans for Commencement 2022

Dear Members of the Class of 2022:

Congratulations on your pending graduation from Carnegie Mellon University! As we look ahead to the next semester, I write to announce several important details pertaining to the 2022 Commencement exercises, which have been scheduled for May 13-15, 2022.

We are delighted to announce that we are planning on celebrating this year’s Commencement in person, and to be able to welcome your guests and our entire community. During this historic weekend, not only will we celebrate you, but we will also celebrate the Classes of 2020 and 2021!

While more specific details will be available in early 2022, we hope the following information will help your planning for the big weekend! We are currently planning the following ceremonies for Commencement 2022:

  • On the afternoon of Friday, May 13, we will hold a Commencement ceremony for doctoral and master’s degree candidates from all three classes in Gesling Stadium on the Pittsburgh campus.
  • On the afternoon of Saturday, May 14, we will hold the traditional hooding ceremony for doctoral candidates from all three classes at the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh.
  • On the morning of Sunday, May 15, we will hold a Commencement ceremony for all bachelor’s degree candidates from all three classes in Gesling Stadium on the Pittsburgh campus.
  • These three ceremonies will also be available by livestream for those unable to attend in person.
  • CMU’s colleges, schools and departments will host their traditional diploma ceremonies throughout the weekend, and they will be open to graduates of all three classes. We expect to publish the full schedule of ceremonies by early February.

In the coming months, we will share more details about these events, including some very exciting honorary degree recipients and Commencement speakers, who have already been confirmed! We are planning a very special experience with all the pomp and circumstance you expect from a CMU Commencement, so keep watching your email and the Commencement website for the latest updates!

Of course, even as we actively plan for a robust in-person celebration in May, we are mindful that the pandemic is still evolving, as evidenced by the Omicron variant. As it has been throughout, our foremost priority is your health and safety, and all decisions about Commencement will continue to be driven by the guidance of public health experts. Accordingly, our ability to host this event in person, or the conditions under which we are able to do so, may be impacted as the pandemic continues to unfold. We will stay in communication with you as more information is known, and will post updates to the Commencement website.

These Commencement exercises offer an exciting opportunity to reflect on and celebrate all that you have achieved – and a return to the normalcy that we have all been yearning for. We look forward to celebrating with you and your loved ones, and with our entire Tartan community.

Until then, best wishes for a joyful holiday season, and for a successful spring semester!

Sincerely,
