Carnegie Mellon University

November 11, 2020

Dear Members of the University Community,

Today marks our nation’s annual observance of Veterans Day, when we remember all those who have served our country as veterans, as well as pay tribute to all active-duty service men and women and their families.

We owe an incredible debt of gratitude to these extraordinary patriots, especially those CMU faculty, students, staff and alumni who enhance our community as military veterans. Our achievements as an institution are amplified because of their service and commitment.

CMU is proud to have close to 300 veterans among our staff, faculty and students and to host a Naval ROTC unit on our campus. In addition to other recognitions, Carnegie Mellon was recently awarded a Seven Seals Award for its support of employees who serve in military guard and reserve organizations. The award is presented by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for military reservists. We look forward to continuing to enhance programs and initiatives that support CMU veterans and active-duty service men and women.

While I regret that we are not able to gather at the flagpole on our Pittsburgh campus for our annual ceremony, I hope you will take a moment this Veterans Day to honor all those who have defended our nation and have safeguarded our freedoms. In recognizing their service and sacrifice, we celebrate the democratic values that unite us all as Americans.

Sincerely,

Farnam Jahanian
